Labor Day weekend is upon us! For many of us, it means soaking in those last few summer rays, BBQing with friends and family and forgetting for a few days that…winter is coming. Okay, okay sorry! I might be missing Game of Thrones a little too much already.
For those of you looking for a super simple chicken burger recipe, look no further! These burgers have the perfect amount of flavor and juiciness that a lot of ground turkey or chicken burgers tend to lack IMHO. And while I can’t compare them to beef burgers since I never really eat them, I’d be willing to bet they’d give any store bought burger a run for its money. Overly confident? Maybe.
In all honesty, whatever kind of meat you’re craving, I’m still going to recommend a homemade burger. I pretty much recommend homemade everything if you haven’t figured it out by now! Simply, you have so much more control and can cater the recipe to your taste preferences and dietary needs. What could be better? Shake Shack…that might be better. But what else!?
If you’re looking for a lean protein option but don’t want to skip out on the barbeque fun, I highly recommend giving these burgers a try.
For some reason, I just can’t get on board with turkey burgers. I’ve hated them for as long as I can remember but recently I’ve been craving a burger that isn’t made of veggies. Since I never had a chicken burger, I thought it couldn’t hurt to give a homemade one a whirl using ground chicken breast. I imagine you could use ground turkey instead though.
For the seasoning, I use paprika, garlic powder and freshly grated onion in addition to your regular salt and pepper. In the photos, I’m using red onion but truthfully it was all I had in the house and a white onion works just as well, if not better.
Simply add all ingredients to a mixing bowl and fold or stir until the mixture is combined – it will be quite sticky at this point so I highly recommend chilling in the refrigerator for at least an hour before shaping into patties. I have successfully been able to form them without chilling the mixture but it was insanely difficult and probably not worth the hassle.
Once your patties are formed, heat olive oil in a large pan and cook 3-4 minutes on each side or until cooked through. With this recipe, I usually make five patties and 3-4 minutes on each side is sufficient but just be sure to adjust your cooking time to accommodate larger or smaller patties.
Add the burgers to your favorite bun and pile high with toppings! I personally love mine on a potato bun with avocado and onion. Comment and let me know how you enjoy your burgers!
1 lb ground chicken breast
3 T fresh grated onion
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
¼ teaspoon paprika
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
1 T + 1 teaspoon olive oil
1. In a large mixing bowl, add ground chicken, onion, salt pepper, paprika, garlic powder and 1 teaspoon olive oil. Fold ingredients until just combined.
2. Cover mixture with plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
3. After chilling, remove mixture from refrigerator and shape into patties.*
4. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium-high heat in a large pan.
5. Place patties in pan, being sure not to crowd them, and cook 3-4 minutes per side or until cooked through.
6. Enjoy on your favorite bun stacked high with delicious toppings!
*I typically make five patties with this mixture, but feel free to make them as big or as small of you’d like.
GRILLING NOTE: I have not tried these burgers on a grill. However, I’d highly recommend chilling the patties, once formed, for an additional 1-2 hours before placing on the grill. The mixture is very tacky so chilling will be necessary.
